VATS (Laparoscopic)Thymectomy in Myasthenia Gravis

A 28 yearold female from Sudan, diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis back in her countrywas admittedto Metro Hospital, Faridabad. After all investigations and evaluations, she was planned for VATS Thymectomy. Myasthenia Gravis is an auto-immune disease in which body develops antibodies against it own cells, which results in weakness inarms and legs, difficulty in swallowing and speaking, all these symptoms make her unable to walk, eat& perform daily activities. Myasthenia Gravis majorly affects the patient’s lifestyle. Explaining about her condition patient says “there were days when I was just laying in bed all day. I felt horrible because I can see that I am getting weaker and I know that something is not right with me.”The muscles around the eyes tend to be affected first, causing the eyelids to droop. Patients may experience double vision, weakness in the arms and legs, and difficulties chewing, swallowing, speaking, and breathing.

The permanent treatment for this condition is removal of Thymus gland from where hormone is released which act at neuro tranmitorjunction.Thymus gland is a part of our immune system which is situated in the upper chest beneath breastbone just over the heart, and trigger or maintain the production of the antibodies that block acetylcholine.

Thymus gland can be removed with open technique (sternotomy) which leaves a big scar and can add more complications to the patient. So our minimally invasive surgery team decided to treat the condition with Laparoscopic (VATS) technique. Dr. B.D Pathak, Director, Minimally Invasive, GI & Bariatric surgery department said that, it was a challenging case, as patient with one autoimmune disease are often vulnerable. With our expertise and state of the art facilities, we overcome all difficulties and successfully performed the procedure without anyblood loss. Patient was absolutely fine after the surgery and went back to her country with big smile on her face.”

The Managing Director of Metro Hospital, Faridabad, Dr. S.S. Bansal said that he feels privileged to provide world class health services to hispatients from India and abroad. We have successfully treated various complicated cases under the treatment of experienced doctors and surgeons, and we will continue to serve patients with our state of the art facilities.
