Take Care Of Your Heart During Winter

Winter is a season of cold and flu; it is also the time when highest numbers of heart diseases get diagnosed. A research shows that there is almost 50% rise in the numbers of heart attack reported in winter season. You may find it surprising that heart attack suffered during winters is more severe as compared to those occurring in summer season.

Our team of Cardiologist & Managing Director of Metro Hospital, Faridabad said that heart attacks in cold weather are more concerning as they can cause severe damage to the heart muscle. People with existing heart conditions and older people are at a higher risk and should take necessary steps to stay warm when temperatures drop.

Every year in winters, our hospital witness more heart attack cases in comparison to other time of the year. There are various reasons behind the rise including the narrowing of blood vessels in cold weather. Arteries which are already narrowed, can lead to complete blockage of arteries and trigger a heart attack.

People with high blood pressure should avoid morning walk as there is a 50% higher risk of heart attack associated with early morning surges in blood pressure. Apart from heart ailments, the severe cold also brings along cases of respiratory tract infections, such as asthma, bronchitis, and joint pains.

Reasons

  • Because of cold weather smog & pollutants settle on ground leading to chest infections & breathing problems.
  • In winters the BP rises and coronary arteries shrinks leading to lack of blood supply.
  • As sweating doesn’t occur, the extra water gets accumulated in lungs leading to failure symptoms.

Prevention

  • Don’t skip your exercise; adjust your timing to extreme weather.
  • Salt & water intake should be reduced as there is no loss to sweating.
  • Monitor your BP regularly, if it is constant high, consult your cardiologist.
  • If symptoms of infections are seen they should be promptly treated with proper use of antibiotics.
  • Don’t skip your medication.

How To Detect That You Are Going To Have Problem

  • Measure your fluid intake and urine output. If your urine output is less that the water you are drinking that means fluid is getting accumulated in lungs and sooner it will reflect as heart failure symptoms.
