Metro Hospital Faridabad is Celebrating World Asthma Day

Metro Hospital Faridabad is organizing Asthma awareness talk on upcoming World Asthma Day on 7th May 2019 at 4:00 PM in new OPD Wing.  The aim of this health talk is to raise awareness about asthma and the risk factors related to it. The theme this year is “STOP for Asthma”: where STOP stands for Symptom Evaluation, Test Response, Observe and Assess, and Proceed to Adjust Treatment. According to World Health Organization statistics 235 million people suffers from asthma across the globe. It is non-communicable diseases which is common among children.

If we talk about India, we have 15-20 million asthmatics which is increasing every year, says Dr. Pankaj Chhabra, Sr. Consultant, Respiratory Medicine. “Asthma can be controlled with good medical management which allow people to enjoy good quality of life.” He added.

Asthma is a chronic lung disease characterized by recurrent attacks of breathlessness, chest tightness, and cough that differ over time in their occurrence and severity. During an attack, the lining of the airways swell, causing the air passages to narrow and thus affecting the airflow in the lungs.

Asthma Causes, Risk Factors and Symptoms

The exact cause of asthma is not clear, however a combination of genetic factors and environmental exposure put people at the greater risk of developing asthma. Some of the common risk factors are having a parent with asthma, severe respiratory infection, allergy, or exposure to some chemical irritants in the workplace.

Symptoms of asthma vary from person to person which includes shortness of breath, tightness in chest, severe cough especially at night, tiredness, wheezing sound while breathing. Patient medical history and few breathing tests (pulmonary function test-Spirometry) helps to diagnose Asthma. It can be managed by taking prescribed medicines and learning to avoid triggers that cause asthma symptoms.
