Scoliosis is a condition wherein a person’s spine is curved making a shape like letter “S” or “C”. Severity of disease differs from person to person, people with slight scoliosis, curve may not pose much problem. A young 20 year old female dentist from Iraq was brought to Metro Hospital Faridabad with curved spine which was affecting her life majorly. Because of the progressively increasing curve of her spine she was not confident about her looks, her parents has consulted various doctors in Iraq but after seeing no improvement they decided to visit India for better treatment options.

They came to Metro Hospital Faridabad and consulted the team of neurosurgeons, Dr. Tarun Sharma and Dr. Sachin Goel who explained her parents about her condition and how corrective surgery can change her life. Dr. Tarun said “patient was suffering from congenital kyphoscoliosis which is a birth defect of back bone. Kyphoscoliosis is a musculoskeletal disorder, which is a combination of kyphosis and scoliosis where there is abnormal posterior and sideways curvature of the spine. In this disease spine will no longer grow straight as vertebrae comes fused together, but legs might continue to grow allowing the patient to become taller but with a hump over the back area. Kyphoscoliosis can be distressing experience for adolescent patients and their parents & in severe cases patient is not being able to stand straight or walk normally as in this case. 

The patient was admitted 1 week before at our hospital she was thoroughly evaluated & then she underwent scoliosis correction surgery. It took us six hours to completely correct the deformity of her spine which was about 70 degree curve. This patient has a half-malformed vertebra at the mid-back level since birth and that had led to the spine of about 20cm above and this level to develop into abnormal curvature. We did almost 95 percent correction of abnormal curvature of her spine by putting screw and rods.
